One crazy week

What an exciting and stressful week this was! We started the week we an ice storm. Our school dismissed early and my youngest son fell on our driveway coming up to the house hitting his face hard. We spent the afternoon in the ER and he received 9 stitches in his lip and chin. Once we safely arrived home we got ready for the big storm. On Tuesday our area was hit with 20 inches of snow. We enjoyed lots of family time together and did lots of baking. On Thursday my son had a follow up appointment with the doctor to check on his stitches. We couldn't get any snow plow companies to come all the way out to our house in the country so my husband and I spent 4 back breaking hours clearing our long driveway so I could get my car out. Friday I spent the whole day with severe back pain from all the shoveling. OUCH! Today my son got his stitches out. He's sad that he wasn't able to show them off to all his friends but the great news is that he healed well and his scar should be very minimal. How was your week?

My daughter had her heart broken for the very first time this week! She got off the bus after school on Monday and ran to her room crying. I went to check on her and she was so heartbroken because her "boyfriend" of 2 months had dumped her on the bus in front of everyone. UGGH!! I hate how mean they can be at this age!! She's so young and it hurts me to see her in pain! In her 6th grade class all the girls are "dating" 7th graders. I call it "dating" in quotation marks because this is a very rural school and "dating" consists of sitting together at lunch and calling each other on the phone. She was floating on cloud 9 when this boy asked her out and now I feel so useless as I try to help her feel confident and work through her pain. Is anyone else dealing with broken hearts and first love with their children?

I had to run into town for some errands today and when I got back home I put the key in my door lock and it turned like normal but when I went to pull the key out the whole inside of the lock came out with it!! Little tiny pieces fell everywhere. I tried to put it back in because my door was still locked but it didn't work. I had lost my back door key awhile back and never gotten it replaced so I was completely locked out! I called my husband on my cell phone and he would be able to get home for about and hour so I sat in my car to wait. After I few minutes I decided I would try messing with the lock again and I tried sticking my car key in the hole and poking around. I felt a little click and viola! the door was unlocked! I called my husband back and asked him to pick up a new door lock on his way home. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

Well, It's been a long weekend at our house. Both my daughter and youngest son came down with the stomach flu this weekend. Here is the recipe for my favorite Christmas cookies, Muddy Snowballs!

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
Cookies
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
2/3 cup confectioner's sugar
1 egg yolk
11/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts

Dust
3/4 cup confectioner's sugar
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1. In a large bowl, using a wooden spoon, cream the butter until smooth. Stir in the melted chocolate and blend well. 2. Add the 2/3 cup of confectioner's sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla extract and stir until combined. Stir in the flour and salt until smooth. 3. Add the walnuts and stir until combined. Cover and refrigerate the dough for at least 1 to 2 hours or until it is firm enough to roll into balls. 4. Heat the oven to 350. Form scant tablespoonfuls of the dough into 1-inch balls. Place the balls on two ungreased baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch between them. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the tops of the cookies are set. Cool on the baking sheets for about 3 minutes. Repeat until all the dough has been used. 5. Meanwhile, stir together the 3/4 cup confectioner's sugar and cocoa powder in a shallow bowl. Carefully dip the warm cookies into the dust (that is, throw them in the mud) to coat. 6. Cool the cookies completely on a wire rack. Roll again in the cocoa-confectioner's sugar dust. These snowballs don't need refrigeration -- just store in an airtight container. Makes about 4 dozen Muddy Snowballs.
